Gummy Vitamins: Debunked!


Let’s state the obvious – gummy vitamins are delicious and easy to take, so it’s no wonder they’re such a popular dosage form. But are they the best option out there?


We formulate our products to include exactly what you need, in just the right doses, and nothing you don’t need. This goes for not only what’s inside the supplement, but also the “outside” of the supplement. There are many dosage form options, including capsules, gummies, tablets, chewables, and more. We chose our dosage form carefully and decided to stay away from gummies for a couple striking reasons.


First and foremost, gummies limit your body’s absorption of the vitamin/supplement compared to capsules and other dosage forms.


All the various dosage forms can be thought of as the “vehicle” transporting the nutrients from your mouth, down your esophagus, through your stomach, and finally into your small intestine, which is where all the absorption happens.


In the case of gummies, you’re breaking the vitamin/supplement open by chewing before swallowing – in other words, the vehicle is breaking down before it reaches its final destination. The powerful acid in your stomach can actually destroy the now “loose” nutritional ingredients before they even have a chance to reach the small intestine to get absorbed. Depending on the level of destruction in the stomach, this could render the entire vitamin/supplement useless, or at the very least result in inconsistent dosing.


Gummies also include a number of unnecessary and unhealthy ingredients.


Gummies rely on some combination of binders, fillers, and/or thickeners to achieve the right shape and consistency. Most also include added sugars and flavorings for taste and added colors so their appearance matches their flavor (e.g. red gummy for strawberry flavor).


While the Supplement Facts box details the “active” nutrients inside the vitamin/supplement, the Other Ingredients list underneath contains all the “inactive” ingredients, including those that make up the gummy or other dosage form.


Take a look at the Other Ingredients list on gummy products from three major vitamin/supplement brands:


Brand #1 Other Ingredients:

Sugar, Corn Syrup, Dicalcium Phosphate, Gelatin. Contains <2% of: Citric Acid, Fruit and Vegetable Juice (color), Maltodextrin, Natural Flavors, Pectin, Silica, Vegetable Oil (Palm) (Contains Carnauba Wax).


Brand #2 Other Ingredients:

Corn Syrup, Sugar, Water, Gelatin, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Palm Oil, Natural Flavors, Lactic Acid, Colors Added, Sodium Lactate, Carnauba Wax.


Brand #3 Other Ingredients:

Glucose syrup, sugar, water, gelatin; less than 2% of: blend of oils (coconut and/or palm) with beeswax and/or carnauba wax, citric acid, color (purple carrot juice concentrate), lactic acid, and natural flavor.


While gummies are great options for children and others who are not able to swallow whole capsules, we believe they should be reserved for only those who truly need them.
